Karen has many years experience as a professional writer for stage and screen.
Her first script FOOTPOWDER about the death of the mining industry was produced by Radio 4. Her second script CASH IN HAND a stage play won a Liverpool Festival of Comedy award. She then worked in television, writing 15 episodes of series soap. Her second radio play, THE KING OF EDGE HILL generated a huge number of audience calls. Commissioned as a stage play, it won the ‘HSBC award for New Playwriting Talent’ and ‘The Echo Arts award for best New Play.
IN SEARCH OF THE BIG BAMBOO was Karen’s third stage play. THE RAIN HAS STOPPED was the very first episode of LA Productions ‘Moving On’ for BBC 1, earning Sheila Hancock a RTS nomination. I’M THE BOSS a dark 60 min Radio 4 drama is in development as a film. LETTING GO her second Moving On episode for BBC 1 focused on the heartbreak of codependency.
SHERBET DOLLS a comedy drama highlighting the sexualisation of children and THE CAMEL HOSPITAL were both 75 min Radio 4 dramas. TONTINE with Alison Steadman was broadcast in 2013. THE SHRINE was her third authored TV drama for BBC 1. ’THE MARK was broadcast on Radio 4 in 2014.
Karen recently collaborated on a theatre project inspired by classic crime dramas using puppetry and total theatre techniques which is darkly comic and lots of fun. She’s currently working on 3 part radio drama, and a full length feature film.
