Do I need any experience to join an acting class?

You’re not the only one wondering this

The short answer? You don’t need any experience at all to start. And no — you won’t be the only beginner in the room.

If you’re thinking about trying acting but worried you don’t have the experience — you’re not alone.

This is one of the most common questions we’re asked. And it usually comes with a quiet fear behind it:

What if I look stupid? What if everyone else knows what they’re doing? What if I’m out of my depth?

Let’s look at what that actually means in practice.

Our most popular courses are for beginners

At MAD, most of our students are complete beginners — or picking it back up after years away.

You don’t need to have:

  • Studied drama at school
  • Been on stage before
  • Read a single line of Shakespeare
  • Dreamed of acting since you were six

You just need to fancy giving it a go.

People join our classes for all sorts of reasons:

  • A creative outlet after work or parenting
  • A fun way to meet new people
  • A confidence boost after a tough patch
  • Or simply because they’ve always wanted to try acting — and finally decided, why not?

We know walking into a class like this can feel nerve-wracking. That’s why we keep things friendly, supportive, and down-to-earth from the moment you arrive.

What actually happens in a beginner acting class?

Our Acting for Beginners course is built for people with zero experience. No auditions. No pressure. No line-learning on day one.

Here’s what to expect:

  • Fun, low-stress games that ease you in and get you laughing
  • Simple exercises to build confidence, spark creativity and get you moving
  • Gentle introductions to voice, character and storytelling techniques
  • Partner and group activities designed to support (not scare) you
  • Kind, constructive feedback — never anything cringey or critical

By the end of each session, you’ll likely feel braver, more open — and often surprised at how much you’re capable of.

Worried you’ll be the odd one out? You’re not.

“What if I’m the worst one there?” You won’t be. Everyone’s in the same boat — that’s the whole point of a beginners’ class. There’s no ‘best’ or ‘worst’ here. Just people learning something new together.

“What if I don’t want to perform?” Totally fine. Loads of people join for confidence, creativity, or just a laugh — not to be on stage. Performing is always optional. No pressure, ever.

“What if I’m older than everyone else?” You won’t be. Our students range from 18 to 80+. Whatever your age, you’ll fit right in.
