Your course questions — answered clearly

Thinking of joining a MAD course? Here’s what you need to know before you book.

Is this course right for me?

Each course has a clear description of who it’s for and what to expect. Still unsure? Try our course picker or drop us a line. We’ll help you decide.

Are places still available?

Yes — unless the course says “FULL” on the booking page. Acting classes are capped at around 15–20 students, writing classes at 9–10.

Can I join late or switch courses?

If the course hasn’t started, we can usually move you to another date. Once term begins, we don’t offer refunds — but we may be able to offer credit for remaining sessions if you let us know early.

What if I miss a class?

It’s common — and not a problem. Read our article on missing a class to see how we handle it. Most people miss one or two without falling behind.

Who else takes part?

Adults of all ages — from 18 to 80+. Some are beginners, others are returning after a break. Everyone’s here to learn, not to judge.

I’m in my 50s or 60s — will I feel out of place?

Not at all. Many of our students are 40+. Our classes are designed for adults, not full-time performers. Read “Am I too old to start acting?” if you’d like more reassurance.

When do the courses run?

We run courses three times a year: September, January, and April/May. Most classes are evenings, with Friday daytime options for some writing and acting courses.

Can this lead to professional acting?

If that’s your goal, the Core Acting Pathway can help. A few students do go on to train or work professionally — but most join to build confidence and enjoy the craft.

Do you offer classes for under-18s?

All MAD courses are for adults only. For younger students, visit our sister school: Performers Theatre School.

Is your venue accessible?

Yes — there are eight steps from Hope Street inside but after that our venue has step-free access and accessible toilets. If you have specific access needs, get in touch before booking so we can help you choose the right space.

Do I get a certificate?

We don’t offer formal qualifications, but we’re happy to provide a certificate of attendance for CPD or personal records.

Can I contact my tutor directly?

We don’t give out tutor contact details — but we’re happy to pass on a message. Just use the contact form.

Will I hold the group back?

No. Our tutors are skilled at managing mixed groups. Everyone is learning at their own pace — and you’ll be supported from day one.

Do I need to audition?

No auditions are required. All standard courses are open-access. (Occasionally our Summer Season includes audition-based projects — this will always be clearly stated.)

What should I wear?

Anything you’re comfortable moving in. No special gear needed — just clothes that let you relax and take part fully.
